Fruit can be the costly part of a balanced diet. This measure prices the cheapest available foods that meet specified quantities across six food groups.
Three bars partition one estimated cost: fruit, animal-source foods and the other four groups. The scale starts at zero. These are cost shares, not shares of food or calories.

FAOSTAT CAHD, July 2026 (SOFI) release. Fruit cost 2.5 / total diet cost 5.55 × 100 = 45%. Both prices are 2021 PPP international dollars per person per day. The remainder combines vegetables, starchy staples, legumes/nuts/seeds and oils/fats. The six groups are checked against the rounded total.
This is a minimum-cost model, not an observed shopping basket or prices per kilogram. Quantities differ across groups. PPP is not a currency exchange rate. Our food-group breakdown covers only 2021; newer total costs do not establish 2025 shares. These cells do not identify why fruit costs so much.
