Teenagers' time online in the OECD grew by more than half in six years, while the mean maths score barely moved. The sharp fall came in 2018–2022, the years of the pandemic and school closures.
Each bar: hours a week 15-year-olds spend online in and out of school, average of 25 OECD countries. Maths scores are in the text.

- Average of 35 OECD countries: maths, age 15 points
2012: 490.5; 2015: 487.2; 2018: 489.7; 2022: 474.8
OECD, 21st-Century Readers (2021), tables B.1.1–B.1.3: hours online from PISA 2012–2018 answers, the same 25 countries. Maths: PISA 2022 trend table, average of 35 OECD countries.
The hours (25 countries) and the scores (35) cover different sets. The 2022 question on time changed, so 2022 hours are not comparable with earlier ones. Hours rising without scores falling does not prove the internet harmless, only that one did not follow the other at once.
