Iran: more and more women go to university, yet only 1 in 7 women work or seek work
2022
There are 59 women students per 100 women of student age, up from 14 in 1996. Yet only 13% of women aged 15+ work or seek work, almost as in 1996 (11%).
More
Women students per 100 women of student age: women studying at universities per 100 women in the five years after school (UNESCO). Working or seeking work: the share of women aged 15+ (ILO). The two are measured differently, so the lines are not compared by height; together they show a gap between study and work.
Blue is the card’s first number, orange the second; they share one scale. The gap between them is shaded. The large numbers are the latest year both lines share.
- Tertiary enrolment, women % gross
14.4 (1996) → 59.1 (2022)
- Female labour force participation % of women 15+
10.6 (1996) → 13.5 (2022)
Only years where both series are published; gaps are not filled. Women students per 100 must rise by at least 15 and the share of women at work change by less than 5 points. The measures differ, so no crossing is marked. Thresholds pick a story and do not show that one causes the other.
Students of any age are counted, so the number can exceed 100; such countries are not shown. The labour force is an ILO modelled estimate.

What keeps educated women out of work: laws, customs, or the jobs themselves?
