In 2022 15-year-olds were asked how often their own phones and tablets distract them in maths lessons. Countries differ several-fold: in Japan and Korea almost everyone says never, in Finland and Latin America a minority.

Each bar: the share of pupils who said their own devices never or almost never distract them in maths lessons. The three highest, the OECD average and the lowest.

    OECD PISA 2022, Volume II, tables II.B1.3.9 and II.B1.3.13 (score gap for pupils never distracted, S.E. 0.6). Maths at age 15, 2018→2022: Japan 527 → 536, Finland 507 → 484.

These are pupils' own answers, and what counts as being distracted differs across countries. Within Finland the score gap for pupils never distracted is not significant. The association does not make devices the cause of differences between countries.
