Why does Germany grow when deaths outnumber births?
What one country’s population is made of: births, deaths, arrivals — and what projections did not expect.
The cards, in order
- Germany: more deaths than births for over 30 years in a row
Then why is the population not shrinking?
- Germany: more deaths than births, yet the population grows — because people arrive
Did projections expect so many arrivals?
- Germany: in 2014–2024 6.84M more people arrived than left — Eurostat expected +2.56M in 2013
Whose babies are born now?
- Germany: one in three babies has a mother born abroad
Is that enough to make the country younger?
- Germany: 1.6 times as many people aged 65+ as children under 15
Growing through arrivals, and ageing
In 2023 Germany had 315k more deaths than births, while 610k more people arrived than left. Over 2014–2024 migration added 6.84M people; in 2013 Eurostat expected 2.56M. One in three babies has a mother born abroad, and there are already 1.6 times as many people aged 65+ as children.
