The cards, in order
- Russia: fewer babies die than in the US
Then why are lives shorter than in Morocco?
- Morocco: people live longer than in Russia
Whose lives are shorter?
- Russia: women outlive men by 11.7 years, 2.2 times the world average
And for those who reach 65?
- Russia: life expectancy at 65 exceeded Japan’s in 1960; now it is lower
The gap is not in infancy
In Russia 3.5 babies per 1,000 births die before the age of one, fewer than in the US (5.3). But life expectancy is 73.3 years, below Morocco’s; women outlive men by 11.7 years; and a 65-year-old can expect 17.1 more years against 22.5 in Japan. In 1960 Russians aged 65 had more years ahead than the Japanese.
