   Moldova: the IMF counts 612k fewer people than the UN

   How many people lived in Moldova in 2024? The IMF (April 2026) says 2.42M, the UN projection says 3.04M. Both are official; the gap is 20% of the UN figure. Almost all of the gap is territory: the IMF and Moldova’s statistics exclude Transnistria; the UN includes it.
