The number of babies born in a year: in one country and in all 27 countries of today’s EU together. About 450 million people live in the EU, but women there have fewer than one and a half children each; in Africa and South Asia far more.

Blue is births in the country, orange in all EU countries together; one scale. The ring marks the overtaking.

The sum of births in the 27 current EU countries for the years all 27 have (UN estimates and national statistics). Selection: non-EU countries with at least 20 million people, which had fewer than half the EU’s births at the start and more for at least three years in a row now; three cards, where the population is smallest against the EU’s.

Births in countries with incomplete registration are UN estimates from censuses and surveys. The EU is taken within its current borders for every year.

    A question for this picture

What matters more for the number of births: how many children each woman has or how many young women there are?
